To be fair, I originally played AoW3 right when it came out. In AoW3, I don't know how many time i missed killing a ranged unit by 1 HP (after the attack of opportunity from disengaging melee) and then had it just demolish another unit of mine with 3 point black archer shots that dealt more damage than the unit had HP at full health. So if I deal 50 damage, it drop the offensive power of the stack by 40%. In FE:LE, most trained units are in stacks of 3-5, with each individual soldier contributing to the strength of the "unit." While the stack might have 100 HP and 50 attack, each soldier has only 20 HP and 10 attac. Enemies are also at full strength with even just 1 HP left. they will SHRED most units) means any unit is susceptible to death by a dozen units ganging up on it. Trying to play through those with 42 units and all the above instant-death mechanics (especially with ranged units at close range.
The above is only further compounded by the ridiculously huge battle you can wind up fighting, with up to 7 full armies all fighting on the same map. and it gets shredded from back and forth flanking attacks (units turn to face whatever attacked them last, meaning you can get several flanking attacks from all side of the same unit in the same turn).
and being unable to choose facing in combat! Seriously? With flanking being so huge why can't we choose which direction to face after moving!? I want to park a tough unit at a chokepoint, but he winds up facing with his ass to the enemies after movement. ESPECIALLY since everyone moves at once combined with limited retaliations and flanking bonuses. Am I the only one that didn't really like AoW 3 combat? It just feels too much like instant death knife-fight, where you go from full health to dead in the blink of an eye.
